Kamma Pokuri Gandhasiri Gothra Family Members Welfare Trust, in short referred as “Pokuri Gandhasiri Trust”, a registered Trust with charitable objects to serve the family members having “Pokuri” as their surname with “Gandhasiri” as their Gothram belongs to the “Kamma” caste with their origin from the Prakasam District of Andhra Pradesh spread across the country with a common platform to build oneness among themselves and to take care of their social security and welfare without leaving any one of them helpless and live in a state of despair.

 

“Kamma” Caste

 

“Kamma” is one of the prominent castes in the Telugu-speaking Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states as well as in the parts of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. This community has a rich and ancient history with widespread influence across the nation.

The Kamma caste has been considered as one of the oldest and most well-known caste in the region. The term "Kamma" is derived from the Sanskrit word "Karma," which means "work" or "action."

 

“Pokuri” Surname

The surname "Pokuri" (పోకూరి) is one of the Indian origin, specifically in Telugu. "Pokuru" means 'flower'. As per Ayurvedic Medicinal Plants of Sri Lanka Compendium Version 3, Hibiscus flower (మందారపువ్వు) is called as“Pokuru wada mal”. There is a village called “Pokuru” located 11 Km from Kandukur. Hibiscus flower plant can be commonly seen in home gardens in the villages of Prakasam Dist.

 

The surname "Pokuri" might be originated from a place associated with flowers or someone who was involved in the cultivation or the trade of flowers. Surnames in India often had a historical or occupational significance, reflecting a person's caste, profession, location, or family lineage. Therefore, the surname "Pokuri" might have been given to the families whose ancestors were flower cultivators or lived in an area known for its abundance of flowers. It represents a connection to the nature and possibly a lineage tied to the horticulture.

Families with Pokuri surname belongs to the Kamma caste found in Prakasam District of Andhra Pradesh particularly in between Chirala-Kandukur-Darsi. These families have been doing farming and subsequently ventured into various professions like business, film industry, IT sector, Medica profession etc. 

“Gandhasiri” Gothram

“Gandhasiri” (గంధశిరి)  Gothram is one of the many ancestral lineages (Gothras) found in Hinduism. People belonging to the Gandhasiri Gothram trace their ancestry back to a common male ancestor, typically a revered sage or Rishi, named Gandhasiri. According to Hindu tradition, the Gothra is passed down from father to sons, and members of the same Gothra has been considered to be relatives.

The purpose of the Trust is to serve as a community platform for the individuals belongs to the “Kamma – Pokuri – Gandhasiri Gothra family members” to come together, preserve their cultural heritage, support each other, address various social, cultural, religious needs including traditions, customs, and rituals.

Also promote unity, harmony, and co-operation among its members, fostering a sense of belonging and to address issues related to education, healthcare, and social welfare. 

Overall, Pokuri Gandhasiri Trust plays a crucial role in preserving the cultural heritage, promoting oneness and welfare among its family members.
